Back To Basics: Blanket Squares – Garter Stripes

Hopefully you have chosen your wool & have decided how big you want your squares to be.

In this first square we are going to knit using the basic knit stitch on every row to create the garter stitch.
The only thing we need to concentrate on in this square is our stripes.

Start by casting on the relevant number of stitches.

1) Knit 5 rows in your first colour (A).

2) Now join your second colour (B) & knit 6 rows.
As you knit these rows you need to carry colour A up too as this saves you having to cut & rejoin yarn as you knit.

To carry the yarn up the side of your work pull the yarn you want to carry forwards so that it over laps the yarn you are working with then carry on knitting.

3) Knit 6 rows in colour B.

Do the same to colour B as you did above with colour A. Pull the yarn you want to carry forwards to over lap the yarn you are working with & carry on knitting.

Continue steps 2 & 3 to create your stripes remembering to carry the yarn up each time.

On your last stripe only knit 5 rows as the 6th row will be created when you cast off.

If you like this square & want a few incorporated in your blanket then knit as many as you’d like.
