How To: Hand Wind A Centre-Pull Ball of Yarn

Sometimes it is easier to knit or store yarn in balls, however not all yarn comes in a ball especially if you have made it yourself i.e. t-shirt yarn.
Below is a guide to creating a centre pull ball of yarn.

Hand Wind Yarn 1

Start by holding an end of the yarn in your hand as shown above.

The ‘gun’ shape is important as you will need to wrap the yarn in a figure of 8 around your fingers.

Continue to wrap the yarn in a figure of 8 until you cannot fit anymore on your fingers.

Slip the yarn off your fingers & pinch in the middle.

Keeping the starting end away from the rest of the yarn (to the left of the image) start to wrap the rest of the yarn into a ball. I found that keeping my thumb in the middle helped me to keep the starting end from being wrapped up with the rest of the yarn.

Keep wrapping the yarn around until you have none left. Remove your thumb & tuck in the end out of the way so it doesn’t unravel from the wrong end. The only end that should be showing is the end coming from the centre.
