How To: Make T-Shirt Yarn

T-Shirt Yarn

In a previous post Back To Basics: Yarn I mentioned that you can knit with pretty much anything.

In this post I am going to show you how to create yarn from old t-shirts.

You will need:

An old t-shirt without side seams

Fabric scissors

Step One:

Lay out your t-shirt.
Cut off the bottom seam & cut across body underneath the arms.

Step two:

Fold what is left of the t-shirt in half leaving approx 1″ space at the top.
(Fold the t-shirt so that the two open edges are to the left & right.)
Cut into approx 1″ strips but do not cut the 1″ space at the top.

Folded in half with 1" gap

Cut into 1" strips

Step Three:

Open up the t-shirt & cut the strips diagonally across the 1″ space to create one long yarn.

Cut into strips diagonally

Step Four:

Pull the strips between your hands to force the edges to curl to create a tubular yarn.

Now the t-shirt is ready to knit or crochet.

Mass of t-shirt yarn

If, like me, you would rather have a ball of yarn rather than a mass of yarn watch this space as I plan on posting soon about how to hand wind a centre-pull ball of yarn.
